Manufacturing
are eco-friendly and manufactured from renewable sources and/or reclaimed sources. We believe in being good stewards of our national resources and being committed to ethical conservation methods in the harvesting of the wood we use. Furthermore, we strive to reduce unnecessary waste in the normal routines associated with woodworking and recycle that waste whenever posible. These practices also apply to the occasional imported wood we buy through trusted domestic dealers.
In addition to our Wood Block line of products we also manufacture wooden Chalices, Gobblets, Wine Flutes and other food safe vessels. These products are sold only to registered customers using this website. Once they are listed, they are offered on a first come, first serve basis. Procucts such as these are of heirloom quality and made for mostly celebratory purposes (although not exclusively). All food safe products are made of new wood. From time to time, Chosen Wood will offer Tournament/Championship Chess Boards. Great care is given to precision in the manufacturing process and they are built by our most seasoned Master Craftsmen. These elegant, upscale Chessboards, are designed as fuctional works of art and are a perfect addition to any collector.
After the inspection and sorting of new domestic lumber, the wood is milled to spec and then dried for an additional 60 days with moisture content being metered until the wood is prime for processing. We do not use treated lumber of any kind regardless of its origin. Exotic woods, when used, are covered in bee’s wax for their protection during transit to our facility. Wood that is found to have pesticides or chemical preservatives in or on them is rejected.
Reclaimed wood
of reclaimed wood cannot be over-stated and can easily give Chosen Wood products another 100+ years of renewed life. “Old Growth” lumber can be rescued from old barns, demolition sites, abandoned properties, storm damaged trees or sometimes even donated by local citizens. Regardless of how we acquire this type of wood, we always obtain permission from the owners before proceeding. One major benefit to this type of sourcing is the historical knowledge that is often associated with the wood. It is not uncommon to find wood that has been in continuous use for the past 150 years. Add 80 to 100 years to the “Old Growth” lumber used back in the day, and a Chosen Wood block’s seedling can go back as far as the American Revolutionary War. Now there’s a bit of history. When a reclaimed wood block is processed, Chosen Wood will include the back story if one exists. Reclaimed wood requires 2 to 3 times more labor than newly felled lumber, and is often a little more expensive, but in our view, it is worth the price. The physical appearance of these precious blocks can include worm holes, checking, spalting, distressed grain and more. However, each piece is cherished for its unique one-of-a-kind character. Reclaimed wood is only available using finishing oils such as Boiled Linseed, Walnut, Danish, etc. Commercial lacquers are generally unsuitable for their production, however, they can be requested. Currently, we do not use epoxies in our products. That may change as we experiment with "Total Boat" water-based coatings.
Quality
on the high quality of our products and offer many choices to our customers. Chosen Wood blocks are individually handcrafted, one-off, and custom made to order. As a result, we do not offer same day shipping when purchasing our products. After engraving, Chosen Wood blocks are finished with multiple coats of furniture lacquer, while sanding for smoothness in between. When finishes such as Boiled Linseed Oil, Danish Oil or Tung Oil are ordered, allow 5-7 days for curing and polishing.
In the interest of transparency and understanding, Chosen Wood blocks tend to have rustic look and are "Not Perfect" in physical dimensions nor are they void of flaws. Although we use high quality woods and machines to "blank-out" our products, they are all handcrafted and finished individually. This gives each piece a unique look, feel and finish. Our wood blocks are NOT toys and are sold as novelty items only.
